Goals & tasks

CertainGoal's hierarchy is simple: projects → goals → tasks, with subtasks under a task and KPIs attached to a goal. This article explains how the pieces fit together and, importantly, how a goal's status and progress are worked out for you.

The hierarchy

Deadlines & priorities

Every goal has a deadline, and every task can carry its own dates and a priority so you always know what to work on next. Overdue work is surfaced automatically so nothing quietly slips.

How status is calculated

You don't set a goal's status by hand — it's derived from the goal's tasks and its deadline:

StatusMeaning
not_startedNo tasks are underway yet.
in_progressAt least one task is being worked on or completed.
doneAll of the goal's tasks are complete.
overdueThe deadline has passed and the goal isn't done.

How progress is calculated

A goal's numeric progress is the percentage of its non-discarded tasks that are done (0–100%). Complete tasks to move the bar; drop a task by marking it discarded and it no longer counts against you.

Because status and progress come from your tasks, keeping tasks up to date is all you need to do — your goals and project dashboards stay accurate on their own.
